چکیده

-49 Abstract — On April 10 of 2015 Pekka Siirtola defended his PhD thesis, called “Recognizing Human Activities Based on Wearable Inertial Measurements Methods and Applications” [1]. The thesis was supervised by Professor Juha Röning and preeximined by Associate Professors Ulf Johansson from University of Borås, Sweden, and Daniel Roggen from University of Sussex, United Kingdom. Pekka Siirtola successfully defended his thesis against his opponent Professor Barbara Hammer from University of Bielefeld, Germany. This publicly open defence was held in Auditorium TS101 at University of Oulu, Finland.

Recognizing Human Activities Based on Wearable Inertial Measurements

Inertial sensors are devices that measure movement, and therefore, when they are attached to a body, they can be used to measure human movements. In this thesis, data from these sensors are studied to recognize human activities user-independently. This is possible if the following two hypotheses are valid: firstly, as human movements are dissimilar between activities, also inertial sensor data ...

Lower Limb Wearable Capacitive Sensing and Its Applications to Recognizing Human Gaits

In this paper, we present an approach to sense human body capacitance and apply it to recognize lower limb locomotion modes. The proposed wearable sensing system includes sensing bands, a signal processing circuit and a gait event detection module. Experiments on long-term working stability, adaptability to disturbance and locomotion mode recognition are carried out to validate the effectivenes...

Human Motion Recognition Using a Wireless Wearable System

OF THE THESIS Human Motion Recognition Using A Wireless Wearable System by John Paul Varkey Thesis Director: Prof. Dario Pompili The future of human computer interaction systems lies in how intelligently these systems can take into account the user’s context, that is, how well the data that they produce characterizes the user’s current situation. Context awareness is essential for ubiquitous an...

Discriminative Human Full-Body Pose Estimation from Wearable Inertial Sensor Data

In this paper, a method is presented that allows reconstructing the full-body pose of a person in real-time, based on the limited input from a few wearable inertial sensors. Our method uses Gaussian Process Regression to learn the person-specific functional relationship between the sensor measurements and full-body pose. We generate training data by recording sample movements for different acti...

Dynamics analysis of microparticles in inertial microfluidics for biomedical applications

Inertial microfluidics-based devices have recently attracted much interest and attention due to their simple structure, high throughput, fast processing and low cost. They have been utilised in a wide range of applications in microtechnology, especially for sorting and separating microparticles. This novel class of microfluidics-based devices works based on intrinsic forces, which cause micropa...
